First of all, that is a wrong way to install.
Every file in this repository must be placed in your ~/.config/awesome directory.

The following is a correct way:

git clone https://github.com/copycat-killer/awesome-copycats.git
mv -u awesome-copycats ~/.config/awesome

But first you may want to do this:

cp -ar ~/.config/awesome ~/.config/awesome.save

Try reinstalling like this with my latest commit, and if it still doesn't start, restart X with this ~/.xinitrc file:

exec awesome >> ~/.cache/awesome/stdout 2 >> ~/.cache/awesome/stderr

And paste ~/.cache/awesome/{stdout,stderr} here.

Okay, I have followed every step. It's using multicolor theme, even though it haven't been specified anywhere as far as I know.

root@d:~/.config/awesome# ls freedesktop rc.lua.blackburn rc.lua.holo rc.lua.powerarrow-darker rc.lua.steamburn scratch themes icons rc.lua.dremora rc.lua.multicolor rc.lua.rainbow README.rst scripts vicious

The two stdout and stderr files in ~/.cache/awesome are empty.

When I installed my first folder I got told by to put the theme in the ~/.config/awesome/themes folder and the rc.lua in the ~/.config/awesome folder, my apologies.

An Awesome user should know (or learn first) how to handle others' configurations.

Thus, you can't just copy-paste parts of a repository and pretend it's going to work.

If you still have the problem, update your lua, lua-lgi, and recompile Awesome.

This should be your output:

$ lua -v; awesome -v
Lua 5.2.2 Copyright (C) 1994-2013 Lua.org, PUC-Rio
awesome v3.5.1 (Ruby Tuesday)
 • Build: Apr 1 2013 19:51:47 for x86_64 by gcc version 4.7.2 (nobody@copy)
 • Compiled against Lua 5.2.1 (running with Lua 5.2)
 • D-Bus support: ✔

Uh, I have used every single theme except Holo and they have ALL worked correctly. I simply put the rc.lua in ~/.config/awesome and the theme folder in ~/.config/.awesome/themes, I do believe that the theme is broken.

Lua 5.1.5 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 Lua.org, PUC-Rio awesome v3.5.1-7-ga0e45e8 (Ruby Tuesday) • Build: Aug 17 2013 23:13:09 for i686 by gcc version 4.7.2 (root@debian) • Compiled against Lua 5.1.5 (running with Lua 5.1) • D-Bus support: ✘

The fact that they have worked correctly, as you state, it's just your luck.

The theme is not broken, you just don't understand you have to set your machine properly in order to get it working.

Hence I repeat, try to update your lua and lua-lgi (to version 5.2.2, that was the aim of my output), and recompile Awesome.

Closing because it's not an issue.

OP is asked to email me if he followed my suggestions and still has valid installation problems.
