You almost certainly want type_out=Device-array-like in any public interfaces. Avoid plain ndarrays as much as possible; they will break autograd/jit/etc if they leak out.

I think it's okay to have an ndarray returned from a private interface. Something like:

def foo_public(x): 
    x_ndarray = #convert x to ndarray
    return jax.device_put(foo_private(x_ndarray))

def foo_private(x):
   # takes ndarray input
    #  call external code, return ndarray

Narrow version of the issue, change svmbir and BM3D to return jax arrays.
