Hi @Javierd,

Solid choice, STUNner works great for that kind of workload.

As of you issue, my guess is that the External-IP column of the stunner-gateway-udp-svc service is <pending>. This can happen if your k8s cluster does not support LoadBalancer services (on UDP ports).

To check if this is the case, query the k8s services in the stunner namespace and observe the External-IP column:

kubectl get svc -n stunner

For minikube, use minikube tunnel. It should fix the pending External-IP and thus the missing Public IP.

Let me know if this fixes your issue or not.

Okey, so I've been trying to get this working by using minikube tunnel, as you suggested, but I still haven't been able to get it right.
Currently, the problem I'm having is that the webrtc connection fails to be established most of the times, and when it works, it takes over 30 seconds to connect, which makes it unusable. As far as I know, everything should be configured and working properly:

  • I have a GatewayClass and GatewayConfig set up exactly like the introduction example.
  • I have my webrtc app set up on a deployment mediaserver with a label app=mediaserver
  • I have a service mediaserver-media-plane described by the following yaml
apiVersion: v1
kind: Service
metadata:
  name: mediaserver-media-plane
  namespace: default
  labels:
    app: mediaserver-media-plane
spec:
  ports:
    # port is ignored in the below
    - port: 9999
      protocol: UDP
      name: mediaserver-media-plane-port
  selector:
    app: mediaserver
  • And I have a UDPRoute which should redirect the traffic to my service
apiVersion: gateway.networking.k8s.io/v1alpha2
kind: UDPRoute
metadata:
  name: mediaserver-media-plane
  namespace: stunner
spec:
  parentRefs:
    - name: mediaserver-udp-listener
  rules:
    - backendRefs:
        - name: mediaserver-media-plane
          namespace: default

Now, when running minikube tunnel, I can get the external IP address and port

javierd@javierd:~$ kubectl get service -n stunner
NAME TYPE CLUSTER-IP EXTERNAL-IP PORT(S) AGE
stunner ClusterIP 10.111.68.47 <none> 3478/UDP 10d
stunner-gateway-operator-controller-manager-metrics-service ClusterIP 10.100.237.22 <none> 8443/TCP 10d
stunner-gateway-udp-gateway-svc LoadBalancer 10.97.29.57 10.97.29.57 3479:31117/UDP 10d
stunner-gateway-mediaserver-udp-gateway-svc LoadBalancer 10.97.194.199 10.97.194.199 3479:30141/UDP 3d1h

which I use to set the ICE candidates at my javascript client

[{
      url: 'turn:10.97.194.199:30141?transport=udp',
      username: 'user-1',
      credential: 'pass-1',
    },]

So, as far as I know, this should be working, but when I try to use the client to send voice to my webrtc server, it takes more than 40 seconds to connect, and sometimes even more than one minute.

For example, this was one the situations when it actually connected:

I'm currently running multiple docker containers, appart from the minikube cluster, so I suppose that's why there are so many ICE candidates. However, I don't get why there are TCP candidates available when I've only set up a UDP route.

When the connection is being stablished, it always fails initially, but sometimes it ends up connecting, as shown in this screenshot from chrome's webrtc-internals:

The ICE candidate grid can be seen here:

Should I need to set up anything on the media server so that it works? What could be the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Three things:

  • Can you please reinstall with the fresh STUNner release? Judging from the output you sent it seems you're using a relatively older release (given the current pace of development, that means a couple of weeks old). Make sure to helm repo update, then helm uninstall both stunner and stunner-gateway-operator, and finally reinstall both again (Gateway API objects can remain).
  • Judging from your TURN URI (turn:10.97.194.199:30141?transport=udp) it seems to me that you are trying to use the NodePort service (port > 30000) to reach STUNner instead of the LoadBalancer service (please read https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/services-networking/service) and this usually does not work in Minikube (nodes do not have an external address). Can you retry again with turn:10.97.194.199:3479?transport=udp (assuming that your Gateway listener is opened at port 3479)? Also, can you please upload the output of cmd/stunnerctl/stunnerctl running-config stunner/stunnerd-config?
  • This might also be the reason why you cannot see any relay candidate in your ICE dumps: your client cannot reach STUNner so it defaults to UDP and TCP host candidates. Now it is a smaller miracle how your clients can still sometimes manage to connect: I guess from the prflx candidates that your clients are configured with some default STUN server and then the client and the server connect via the Minikube NAT. This is exactly as slow and fragile as you are experiencing. Just check the kubectl logs <stunner-pod-name>: stunner maintains an access log so if anything ever connects to it you can see it in the logs. My guess is that your access log output is essentially empty.

I have just reinstalled both stunner and stunner-gateway-operator, so these are the versions currently used:

NAME NAMESPACE REVISION UPDATED STATUS CHART APP VERSION
stunner stunner 1 2023-01-24 09:23:52.482646722 +0100 CET deployed stunner-0.14.0 0.14.0
stunner-gateway-operator stunner-system 1 2023-01-24 09:23:42.072111996 +0100 CET deployed stunner-gateway-operator-0.13.0 0.13.0

I've also removed the old gateway API objects and create new ones, as I had a bit of a mix between the example objects and the ones I created. Once this is done, I only have a UDP listener on port 3478, and if I'm use that port as the TURN port, it works perfectly, so thanks a lot.
However, I dont exactly know why is that working, let me explain myself:
If I list the stunner services, the load balancer ports are 3478:31595.

javierd@javierd:~/stunner$ kubectl get svc -n stunner
NAME TYPE CLUSTER-IP EXTERNAL-IP PORT(S) AGE
stunner ClusterIP 10.104.179.171 <none> 3478/UDP 46m

As far as I know, the port 3478 is the internal port of the node, inside the cluster, while the public port is 31595, isn't that right?
The output of the command you suggest seems to not be working properly, as it outputs information for a listener already deleted

javierd@javierd:~/stunner$ cmd/stunnerctl/stunnerctl running-config stunner/stunnerd-config

        Public port: 31117

stunner ClusterIP 10.104.179.171 <none> 3478/UDP 46m

As far as I know, the port 3478 is the internal port of the node, inside the cluster, while the public port is 31595, isn't that right?

Not precisely. From the K8s docs:

  • port is the "official" port of the service, it is used both for ClusterIP and LoadBalancer service access,
  • targetPort is the actual port opened at the pods (if not set then by default targetPort=port),
  • nodePort (30000-32768) is a funky port that is opened at the actual Kubernetes node hosting the pods, so you can reach the service using the IP of the node plus the nodeport if this is enabled and if your nodes have an actual public external address (which is not the case for Minikube).

Long story short: STUNner tries to expose your Gateway listener on an LB service, choosing the port to be equal to the port specified in the Gateway listener (3478) and hence you should use the EXTERNAL-IP:service port (10.109.148.228:3478) from your clients to reach it.

The output of the command you suggest seems to not be working properly, as it outputs information for a listener already deleted.

javierd@javierd:~/stunner$ cmd/stunnerctl/stunnerctl running-config stunner/stunnerd-config
STUN/TURN authentication type: plaintext
STUN/TURN username: user-1

        Protocol: UDP
        Public port: 31117

This is weird: your kubectl get svc shows that the LB service was created for a Gateway called vsc-mediaserver-udp-gateway and it has a working external IP while stunnerctl suggests that the Gateway is called udp-gateway and it has no external IP. Which one is right? Are you sure both outputs were collected from the same setup with the same Gateway CRDs and everything is installed into the stunner namespace?

It seems your client is trying to reach a pod at the IP 172.17.0.13, can you please check what's running there (k get pods -o wide) and whether that pod is actually allowed to be reached via STUNner? Note that only permission denied events are reported at the logLevel INFO, try increasing the log-level to all:DEBUG (you can set the logvelel in the GatewayConfig) to see the "permission granted" messages as well (maybe we should change this?).

Thanks a lot for the explanation, I think I get it now.

Yes, it also seemed pretty strange to me. I'm using lens to access the minikube cluster, and all the commands were executed on the same terminal, so it's the same setup, yes, and everything is installed on the stunner namespace.
The right information is the one provided by kubectl get svc (or at least is the one i'm using to connect).

The Gateway called udp-gateway was the first one I created by followind the tutorial, but I deleted it after some testing. In fact, it's not available now:

javierd@javierd:~/stunner$ kubectl get gateway -n stunner
NAME CLASS ADDRESS READY AGE
vsc-mediaserver-udp-gateway stunner-gatewayclass True 160m

It looks like stunnerctl has cached the information or something similar.

The pod running at the IP 172.17.0.13 is the mediaservr which should be receiving the data. While testing, I have checked that although the connection is stablished, the data cannot be sent from the mediaserver to the client, the used library (libdatachannel) fails to send the data.
Regarding your question about whether that pod is allowed to be reached, I think it should be allowed, as I created the service and the UDP route posted on my second message on this thread. Is there anything else that should be done?

About the logs, I think it's cool that they are set to INFO by default, as it's pretty easy to change and otherwise the logs may become unusable on its default behaviour.

I've been trying to solve the error but:

  • I can't get the debug logs to be displayed. I've editted the gateway config to set the log level to DEBUG, but even if I restart the deployment, the stunner pod starts with loglevel INFO

As I pointed out above, there's a major misconfiguration in your setup in that the dataplane you think should be controlled by your Gateway/GatewayConfig/UDPRoute resources fails to pick up the configuration rendered by the operator. 99 percent of the time this is because STUNner was not installed cleanly, e.g., there are two operators running in your cluster repeatedly stepping on each other's toe, or there are stale Gateway resources that interfere with the main config, or similar. Until we fix that, nothing will work. I can help you but you need to provide me with the info I asked, otherwise I cannot find out what got misconfigured.

Sorry, my fault, I forgot to attach the commands to get the info I need. So please send me the output of this:

kubectl get pods,deploy,svc -A -o wide
kubectl get gatewayclasses -o yaml
kubectl -n stunner get configmaps -o yaml
kubectl get gateways,gatewayconfigs,udproutes -A -o yaml

In addition please send me the logs of the operator and the stunner pods. We need to see what's going on here.

By the way, the logs with RROR: error when handling datagram only happen when I try to connect to STUNner from a different machine on the same LAN, and in this case the connections always fails.
And the only logs available on the stunner gateway operator

Thanks. It seems your setup is a bit messy, in that it contains some spurious references and extra Gateway API resources, and this confuses STUNner. Here is a list of the apparent issues:

  • your GatewayClass points to a GatewayConfig called stunner-gatewayconfig that lives in the default namespace (see the parametersRef), which will then trick the gateway operator into believing that you want to run the dataplane in the default namespace so it renders a dataplane configuration there (I guess kubectl get cms would list a stunnerd-config in the default namespace),
  • since there is no STUNner dataplane (stunner pods) in the default namespace, no one will ever reconcile your dataplane config,
  • there is an additional GatewayConfig in the stunner namespace but it is an orphan, as the root GatewayClass refers to the GatewayConfig in the default namespace, and this GatewayConfig seems to be having the DEBUG log-level setting but it has no effect since the operator never considers this GatewayConfig,
  • the dataplane lives in the stunner namespace, but I think it runs with a stale config (maybe an older setup left a stunnerd-config there),
  • some of your UDPRoutes show a status Accepted=False with a message NotAllowedByListeners, indicating that the UDPRoute was never ever attached to a Gateway, and indeed, the Gateway referred (mediaserver-udp-listener) is missing (the correct name is mediaserver-udp-gateway). This is then causes all the permission denied errors.

May I recommend to start anew? Clean up all GatewayClass, GatewayConfig, Gateway and UDPRoute resources and clean up all stale stunnerd-config ConfigMaps from all namespaces that have them. Then, add the GatewayClass but make sure it refers to a GatewayConfig in the stunner namespace, and then add the necessary Gateway and UDPRoute resources to the stunner namespace as well. Always check the object status in the Gateway and UDPRoute resources: if something went wrong then you should see a clear sign of it in status conditions set to False (except for Detached which should normally be False but anyway) and the message should indicate the reason.

If confused, please reread the docs, and especially this.

After cleaning everything up and creating all the resources from scratch everything seems to be working perfectly.
Thanks a lot for all the help and recommendations!

Thanks, happy to hear that. Closing this issue now, feel free to reopen (or better yet, join our Discord) if something new comes up.
