I have no idea what kmonad is or how it works. If you want to use
unicode input on your Linux desktop, the correct way to do it is to use
the XCompose mechanism, that will actually work everywhere.

And if you want a kitty specific solution, use send_text
https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/conf/#shortcut-kitty.Send-arbitrary-text-on-key-presses
from kitty.
Thank you very much for your reply! I think XCompose is then the way I will go forward, via KMonad, as described here.
I'll dump some last thoughts on my kitty specific issue, in case someone else comes across this. I hope that is ok for you, and feel free to ignore this.
We can (badly) generalize KMonad (and derivatives) as software that aggregates and sends key presses.
This works for most Linux applications, except for kitty.
More specifically, the Linux Unicode input[^1]. In kitty these aggregated key presses seem to get 'buffered'.
An automatic press of Ctrl-Sft-U fd <ret>
only shows the behaviour of Ctrl-Sft-U
, opening the kitty Unicode input dialog. A second press then sometimes adds fd
or recurses as new Ctrl-Sft-U
. Finally a third press closes the kitty Unicode input dialogues, but produces a scrambled result (e.g. df
instead of fc
).
To me it seems that kitty is not able to understand the full sequence at once. I am curious if a delayed sequence of Ctrl-Sft-U <delay> fd<ret>
would make it work as 'intended'.
[1]: There seem to be a few different ways to do it; XCompose, the Linux Unicode sequence (apparently ISO-14755?), ...
