I've never witnessed such a problem so far. What sites did you browse during
this session?

I restarted Chrome last night after filing the issue, opened the Chrome TM [1],
then went to one of my Picasa web albums. What I noticed is that HZ seemed to
settle around 20MB after Chrome started. Then when I started hovering in my
Picasa album, the memory usage started climbing. It would jump about 1MB after
hovering on an image and then if I moved my mouse aside and let it sit, the
memory usage would slowly climb by a tenth of a MB every few seconds.

I tried the same thing on my Mac Book Pro 3,1 at work (with the same version of
OS/X, Chrome, and HZ), but I haven't been able to reproduce it. The HZ
extension stays right around 20-25MB.

I've just made the same test with Chrome 8.0.552.215 on Windows Vista and
Chromium 8.0.552.215 on Ubuntu 10.04. Sadly I don't have a Mac to do the test
on OS/X.

On both Windows and Linux, the extension takes around 5-8MB. The memory usage
goes up when hovering photos (less than 100KB per photo), but the memory is
freed after some seconds of inactivity or when switching tabs.

There seems to be issues with memory measuring on Mac: http://crbug.com/44886

I'll have a look at the scripts and see if some code may cause memory leaks,
but I can't guarantee a result. Anyway, thanks for reporting this.

I also noticed this too with HZ 3.0 on Chrome 12.0.742.112 for Windows 7. Up
for days and taking 191M of memory and using 24% CPU. Circumstances are
similar, running Chrome for days. I mostly HZ on reddit.

If there is a more current issue to report on, let me know and I'll post there
as well.

I think replacing jQuery with something compatible but lighter like zeptojs
would really help, especially in instances where you have a high number of tabs
open.

I have the same issue on an i7-920 with 8GB RAM, currently running Win7/Chrome
21.0.1180.89/Hoverzoom 4.6...except this memory leak has continued to happen
through every software update for over a year, and seems to be getting even
worse.

I regularly have to disable/re-enable the plugin to free any memory that
Hoverzoom won't release automatically (I usually notice when it hits the 500MB
range) but just now it was eating over 1.1GB and >20% CPU!

Yes, I hover over a lot of pictures but the entire PC had been idle for hours
when I noticed this so I would have expected HZ to run garbage collection to
clear everything out long before that point.
