That's entirely up to your implementation of the data sources. Nimbus is completely oblivious to where you get the image data by design.

The photos example project uses ASIHTTPRequest as the network backend for fetching photos and Nimbus' in-memory image cache for storing images in memory. Both of these features cache their images based on the image URL so they should be smart enough to avoid requesting the image twice if it's already cached.

That being said, it's possible that if you make two requests for the same image in quick succession that two requests will be fired off. I'm not sure if ASIHTTPRequest supports request piggy-backing or not, but this might be something to look into.
