I haven't looked into the details, but my gut feeling is that kc.wait_for_ready() should fail if the kernel has died. If there isn't a reasonable way to do that, we can close this, but I wanted to make sure we thought about it.

I think the main problem is that msg = self.shell_channel.get_msg(block=True) has no timeout and is waiting in code which is not interruptible via ctrl+c :-( IMO waiting there for 10 or 15 secs (maybe in 1 sec steps to make it interruptible) without getting a reply should raise a "KernelDied" error or something like that :-)
