Interesting. Is there any reason not to do

z = zeros(RGB24,2,2)

? That would certainly get rid of the warnings, and a bonus is that it makes the meaning of z clearer.

z is later on used like this:

img = CairoRGBSurface(z)

Personally, I'd favor updating Cairo.jl to take RGB24 and ARGB32 values. For one, it would simplify choosing the proper FORMAT for surfaces. More information seems better than less information.

I looked into Cairo.jl and found CairoImageSurface defined for other types

julia> z = Array(RGB24,2,2)
2×2 Array{ColorTypes.RGB24,2}:
 RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.38,0.0)     RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.0,0.0)
 RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.498,0.024)  RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.0,0.0)

julia> CairoImageSurface(z)
Cairo.CairoSurface{ColorTypes.RGB24}(Ptr{Void} @0x0000000003fa1490,2.0,2.0,ColorTypes.RGB24[RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.38,0.0) RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.0,0.0); RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.498,0.024) RGB24{U8}(0.0,0.0,0.0)])

now i'm missing a zeros(RGB24,2,2) ...
