You are correct, this is a typo in the README that will be corrected.
The correct syntax should be:

ThrowStatement: ({ argument }, { transpile }) =>
    `assert(false, ${JSON.stringify(transpile(argument))})`

This should handle most throw expressions but keep in mind that Errors that have been instantiated will have a different output.

throw "Error message";            => assert(false, "\"Error message\"")
throw Error("Error message");     => assert(false, "error(\"Error message\")")
throw new Error("Error message"); => assert(false, "class_error(\"Error message\")")
