as per #516, disabling the Live Share extension fixed the issue

Same here, on 4.2.2. Workspaces that had a colour set still show them, however whatever command I run of Peacock it just says "Activating Extensions" in the status bar, and nothing happens. No output in the Peacock output panel either, besides this on startup:

Peacock is in a workspace, so Peacock functionality is available.

I had the same issue myself and I believe it has a conflict with Live share plugin.
Try reinstalling Live Share and I think it would work fine. It worked for me anyway.
