Please provide a working example of $zen-gutter-method about zen-grids

It's possible I'm confused about the zen-grids version I have. This could be user error : )
I'm using a version of zen-grids that came bundled with a Drupal theme, and it looks like in updating the gem in my system, the zen-grids in my project is not itself updated. As you can tell, I have some confusion about Ruby gems, which I rarely work with. So I have a bit of work to do to ensure I'm using a version of zen-grids that supports the $zen-gutter-method variable. Any pointers are welcome. Thanks.

Yes, I think my problem is most likely that I am trying to use features of zen-grids that aren't present in the version that came bundled with my project (1.4). I thought that because "gem list" shows the more recent zen-grids version, that I was all set, but I suppose "gem list" actually lists all version present on the machine.

I've now upgraded to zen-grids 2. I still don't understand how some of these arguments work. When I look at _grids.scss, it seems as though I should be able to pass $gutters and $gutter-method to zen-grid-item-base, but I'm finding this has no effect. Declaring $zen-gutter-method with a variable does not seem to work either. If I pass the $gutter-method directly to zen-grid-item, it does in fact work.
