I may have answered my own question while working on another routes-related issue.

I hadn't seen the + (BOOL)routeURL:(NSURL *)URL withParameters:(NSDictionary *)parameters method, earlier. It allows using objects as parameters.

One of these params could be a UINavigationController, which routes could be configured to try pushing to rather than presenting modally.

If needed, a straightforward category could make the calling syntax as simple as "routeURL:withNavigationController:".

I think I would recommend doing what you suggested in your second post, and pass it along in the parameters dictionary.

In the past I've implemented this by having the main view controller (the window's rootViewController) be a UIViewController subclass that registers for routes. When it receives one, it can just push one onto it's navigationController or present modally on top of itself.
