On a related note I tried to reproduce this issue with mscgen 0.15 and mscgen 
from
revision 31 (trunk) and both fails to create this graph at all. (See issue 13).

I believe this is now fixed on trunk under issue #13.
Are you able to try building from trunk, or will you wait for the next release?
Let me know here, and I will consider rolling a new release for this more 
quickly.
