+1

Also the "Press ? for help." should be turned off with a customize variable to save 2 more lines of space.

Would you believe that I was gonna ask to remove the same line? :)
I'm starting to love my Emacs much more...
It was so ugly!!
Now, I feel I will never go back to MacVim or Vim except within the terminal!

I've experimented with this idea.

For some folders, this makes absolutely sense. This for example:
2014-06-10-190711_287x429_scrot

But other folders tend to bring in a lot of confusion, like this one (I am not in /tmp):
2014-06-10-192036_367x243_scrot

It also helps a lof if I see the complete path while navigating some folders back. I don't need to remember where I am and where my folders are. I think it is better to display the complete path, even if it looks ugly. But it should be fully displayed all the time (for long, nested folders it can be very cumbersome if the full path is not displayed and the user needs to expand the window to see in which folder he is).

Yes, but it makes no sense at all not to see the current folder.
because, when the full path doesn't fit, you don't see the current folder unless you scroll!!

So, three options:

  • The NerdTree way. -> crop the the parent DIRs if they don't fit. (and use "..." to tell that it's cropped)
  • Toggle.
  • View the current only & map a key to show the full path underneath the mode-line.

And you forgot that you can display the full path of the file in the mode-line ;), so why have it twice ?!

Cropping parent dirs until the string fits seems legit to me.
