BTW, the largest inhabitants file in GlassFish can be found in the config-api.jar file (127527 bytes). It should be good for testing any improvements to parsing performance.

This has been fixed. The inhabitants file format has changed a lot, and the InhabitantsParser.parse file is no longer there. The new parser is more linear and will read the file once only.
In the new hk2, the thing to use to parse the hk2 files is DescriptorImpl.readObject, which will read an entry and give back a fully filled in Descriptor containing all the fields present in the file.
