allOf does not do what you think. When you write:

{ "allOf": [ { "schema1": "here" }, { "schema2": "here" } ] }

it means that the instance must obey both schemas. It does not do schema merging. Both schemas evaluate independently.

This also explains why you have a failure caused by additionalProperties being false: the schema for each item of your drawer array (and by the way you forgot "type": "object" in there) tells that the object must have a property named handle but do not allow any other item. Even if the other schema validated the other properties successfully, this alone would cause validation failure.

Finally, for your $ref, you can use resource:/schema/drawer.json (the resource scheme loads from the classpath) instead of a full file reference.

I see, it sounds like it I am not able to accomplish the behavior I outlined above. I will have to figure something else out. Thanks for the URI classpath tip.
