stop() does NOT disconnect the the connection, it only waits for the receiver loop to terminate.

The only way for the connection to disconnect is by (a) something calls disconnect_socket(), or (b) an exception occurs inside Transport.__read(), Transport.notify(), or any listener class. If you are using a version of this package without commit 3bc4b8b (which is any release - there have been no releases since then), then the receiver_loop will take any exception, log it at level debug, and terminate the receiver loop. set up logging to display debug messages to catch this.
