Please email me any one of the files that gets the unreadable error message to
spathiwa at gmail dot com so I
can debug the problem. None of my story files fails to work, but I might have
got them form different
platforms or versions than you. Actually, it's more likely a problem with the
download process than the actual
file, but we'll look into that if I can't reproduce it this way.

I already own all the published Infocom games (except Shogun and Journey, but
those wouldn't work anyway),
so there shouldn't be a legal problem.

Also, please list the exact filenames of the ones which don't show the icons.
(I know about lurkinghorror.z3
already).

Actually, download one of them from your web server using a browser and 'Save
linked file' (or whatever the
menu item is for your browser), and send me that.

If it would be easier, I can give you the link to my webserver. I'll send it
in an
email to spathiwa at gee mail dot com?

Turned out to be a web server config problem.
Closing.

I have updated the Z-file downloaded to check the validity of the file right
after download instead of when you
launch to make problems like this easier to tell what's wrong.

I am presently having the same problem as Aaron: I am able to navigate to the
files
on my server using Frotz, and download them into the stories list. However, I
am
getting the "unreadable story file" message when I try to start the story. I
see the
August 15 message alluds to a web server config problem. Any more info on what
that
problem is so I can check if my server has the same problem?

By the way - the files I am using are all .dat files from the Lost Treasures of
Infocom series.

Try downloading them using a web browser on a computer and see if they actually
download. My server would give me an error in my browser, but no error from
frotz.

Thanks Aaron, that's the clue I needed. My files would not download into a
browser
either, until I modified IIS for the site where I had the .dat files stored.

For anyone else that finds this thread and is having the same problem, the
secret is
to register .dat files in the MIME types list for the site. In IIS, right click
the
website you wish to modify, choose "properties", then select the "HTTP Headers"
tab.
Click "MIME Types", click "New", and add .dat as the extension with
application/octet-stream as the MIME type. Once I did this, everything worked
beautifully.

By the way, my original Starcross file is named STARCROS.DAT. I found out quite
by
accident that if I renamed it to STARCROSS.DAT, the story list in Frotz
displays a
nice little graphic along with the title name. Maybe Frotz does some kind of
database lookup and adds the graphic? If so, very cool. Anybody know any of the
other Infocom file names that result in graphics?
