I think the fundamental problem is that the padding and border size are being modified on hover which affects layout. transform however doesn't effect layout. If you disable the padding and border size settings here then you still get the zoom effect but the layout doesn't shift. I'm unsure what the source of the CSS is though. There may be another way to increase the size of the flexbox container such that the alignment doesn't change when the padding increased.
