Yes, the type needs to be registered. I have it in the tests, but neglected to add it to the docs.

Here's example usage:

ActiveModel::Type.register(:time_only, Tod::TimeOfDayType)
ActiveRecord::Type.register(:time_only, Tod::TimeOfDayType)

class Order < ActiveRecord::Base
  attribute :time, :time_only
end
