It does this on any line. It's not really an issue though as we're using innerText.

Actually this does matter because changing font won't change the spans.

This is our solution.

Replacing line 140 edit_box.innerText = get_edit_text(); with $('span').contents().unwrap(); removes the span tags. Unfortunately it requires jQuery and I haven't found a nice way to do it without.

Switched to textarea and all is fixed, although the method used to update spell-check no longer works.
