We prefer server side validation so we are not open to ddos attacks requesting huge calculations from non-browser clients.

I haven't used it before, but the Flask site recommends https://wtforms.readthedocs.io/en/stable/ for form validation. Not sure how it would play with vue, but maybe something there? We can likely start out simpler and just refactor what we currently have, but it maybe nice to setup patterns in case we need more forms in the future.
