The regulatory folder in itself is not a git repo, so why does it need access to my source code?

RDM was designed such that the regulatory docs are placed next to the source code, however, you don't need to do it this way.

Why place the regulatory docs next to the source code?

We like reviewing documentation changes alongside the associated code changes. Also, we're working on a system that will enforce traceability constraints as part of a CI server. Thus, requirements, design documentation, code, and parts of the risk analysis would all be updated together in parallel.

You'll probably want to have a private repo with your documents, although any general improvements we'd be happy to incorporate back into the init_files in RDM.
