As an interim fix, I've increased the virtual memory of the machine and it started to work ok.
Follow these steps to add 4GB virtual memory..

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/file.swap bs=1M count=4096
sudo mkswap /mnt/file.swap
sudo swapon /mnt/file.swap

To make it permanent, add the following line to the /etc/fstap file:

sudo vim /etc/fstab
/mnt/file.swap none swap sw 0 0

Issue resolved after increasing the memory.
