You shouldn't be running the Matter server directly. Only when you are developing that could be considered but for other cases I really recommend you to not run it this way, we wont provide support. Just run Home Assistant OS in a VM or the docker container (that still requires changes to your host OS).

As for upgrading the base image, we will do that at some point but keep in mind we're dependent of many external factors, the biggest being the whole Matter SDK.

Just run Home Assistant OS in a VM
That's what I ended up doing eventually, because there were just too many moving parts. But then it took me two days to figure out how to get the routing stuff configured correctly :-)
