This isn't code I know super well but I think the conductor can't determine whether a zome function is 'write' until after calling it and having data staged to create. I guess the client code would be trying not to call any functions that write and would accept an error if there's a mistake there? That way there aren't too many redundant zome calls being made and rejected.

yeah that's what I was thinking.

The alternative could be that the zome function needs to be explicitly marked as "read_only" to become available over the read only api (in addition to returning an error if it does attempt to write)
