We do it a bit differently, really. I think we spend less time looking at hard metrics — hours, lines of code committed (we actually like lines of code removed more), things like that. It's more about whether someone is doing really well at what they're doing, be it handling support requests, shipping new features, fixing bugs.

Usually you can tell. People have innate sense of whether or not someone's pulling their weight (or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, smashing it out of the park).

We also have a healthy sense of competition, really. We're impressed by everyone else's code, so we try to outdo each other with our own code. When you see that sort of spirit disappearing, think about what you might want to do to instill it in them.
