I agree that the behavior is unexpected but I'm concerned about possible performance implications by making this change. What do you think?

I have no data to back it up but I suspect the performance impact due to the extra indirection is negligible. I am wrapping all AutoComplete dataProviders in my application because I think the potential performance impact is less risky than the unexpected/incorrect behaviour.
