If so, why? They both behave identically to me (and the http one is quicker to resolve).

HTTP is vulnerable to interception, so does not guarantee that the URL
shortener will redirect to the file you want to download. My Pi runs behind
my firewall, so I don't want to risk that.
Doing it securely is no effort (just change http to https) so I see no
reason not to do so.

Until there is some evidence of "interception" being a real problem, I'm leaving it as it is.

Considering how long the script takes to run, a few seconds extra to download
it is not a big deal. If interception becomes a problem it'll then be too
late. Isn't it better to be secure by default?

The delay has more to do with the redirection service.
