I have the same ussue I suppose:
I run rpi-update and after a entire night it still says:
Raspberry Pi firmware updater by Hexxeh, enhanced by AndrewS
Performing self-update
ARM/GPU split is now defined in /boot/config.txt using the gpu_mem option!
Updating firmware (this will take a few minutes)
from rpi-update.

Do what I list in the 2nd paragraph. This will ensure you are on the latest.
PS there was an update recently so 3851111 is not the latest. Use the code to find the latest...or the version listed on the main page.

Helped me to just remove /root/.rpi-firmware
sudo rm -rf /root/.rpi-firmwareAnd after that you can just:
sudo rpi-updatefrom rpi-update.

Anyone still getting this issue?
If so there is a load of output now, so it should pinpoint the problem.
