I like the idea of a shell, and I have been thinking about that, too. However, being able to enter plain text commands using the same syntax as in the configuration file would mean having to move the parser code into the Atmel as well. Not sure if that will be practical or whether it will still fit. Do you have any practical use cases for this?
And listing the current configuration in plain text would mean to also move the code that converts back from binary to configuration file syntax to the Atmel.
While this would probably be a neat feature, I'm not convinced that it justifies the effort.

Well, the practical use would be independency of a PC to check the config or perform changes :) However, you could start with a more or less "raw" dump of the config and the possibility to directly manipulate single control lines like in my example above.
Ultimately, I believe this would put Keyman64 onto a new level. Just consider how feasible it is just to install the proper USB-drivers under Windows. :(
