The message and prompt code has already been written. I need to create an 'info' node that you can create which would make it easy for these type of notes to be left.

How would this messaging system work, given that we are moving to NES controller style input controls? On-screen keyboard?

I think we are just talking about the ability to leave pre-written messages (written by the game makers not the players).
- (simple example): using the action button on the Guzman statue and a pop up dialogue box tells you what is inscribed there.
- (prompt example): using the action button on something generates a pop up with a Y/N choice and delivers a different response based on choice.
Essentially, its a node for leaving in game jokes to be placed over objects. I assumed something where the messages are hard-coded into the node or in a separate text file and a node that takes a message attribute/argument with a number value to reference which message to display.

I see now. I misunderstood.
This should be fairly easy to get done.

I expect so.
It is simple but I think it would add a lot to the game (i.e., some interaction with many background objects). Even if you can't pick up something, use it, or throw it, etc., I think people would enjoy going around just to find and read the funny descriptions and community in jokes. There is also many places where this would also help game play (such as suggesting what the player needs to do next) I also think it opens up an easy way for many people who have been unable to contribute images, audio, programming, etc. to feel involved by suggesting or figuring out the best or funniest text to use in particular messages. Who knew text could do so much, lol.
