Actually, they're separate. But asking for a single commit or fetching an entire repo is not supported by the CLI currently, not sure how serious that is. python-hpcmp2 works by fetching entire repos (all heads) and then fetch by commit ID.
The larger problem is that the git protocol doesn't support fetching commits, only heads...
