Are you talking about the trip/directions screen? There is little icons for the lines the trip takes. This visualizes the number of changes nicely already. If you want an exact number, you could count them.

Also please note that screen estate especially on small devices is precious and adding another number somewhere isn't that easy.

It is of course possible to have different layouts for different screen sizes, but this is much more work to maintain. I prefer to focus on more important features, as my time is limited.
