What is your suggestion?

I need to change default owner as well.
I suggest to add command line parameters for owner and bits.
Maybe similar to chown and chmod ?

I would prefer permissions and owner info to be preserved within google drive, not chosen on every invocation.
Then grive would become a viable backup solution. Right now, losing bits/owner info (and symlinks :) makes it unusable for anything but tarballs (and as grive currently keeps files in memory, they better stay smallish).

Perhaps it's easiest to put a special file in every directory holding extra info like owner/group/mode/extattrs.
Something like ._grive.modes
In it, every file/dir with non-standard mode (umask)/owner(not current user)/group would be listed with its values.
When restoring/updating files on the local disk, this info can be used to restore the exact permissions/ownership.
