After removing .grive, it works - maybe this was caused by a stale authentication code? In the above scenario, .grive was the only file in the directory structure before i started (i had deleted the state file subdirs manually to force a re-sync).

The code that detect the states of file & directory is not perfect. These bugs are hard to identify and reproduce.
