There are menu options that will do exactly what you describe. First select multiple squares. Go to the Selected Item(s) menu. Inside that menu, you will find the options under "Selected Item(s)<Align<Shape Size<". In the shape size submenu, there are options to match the sizes of either objects or image panels.

I have added an additional method to add insets by using the popup menu that comes up when you right click an image panel. If you create your second inset with that menu item, it will start out having the same size as the first. It is created at the same spot that you clicked on.

It is "Add Split Channel Inset Panels" under the Add Shape submenu.
