What exact descriptors are you not seeing in usbview today?

And no, we do not ever want to unbind drivers from devices, if you want to do stuff like that, use the usbutils package and the usb-hid tool in there.

lsusb is not usbview they get their USB information from different locations, and show different things.

I've thought about unifying them, with one backend to get all the data possible, and then showing it in different formats, but that's a long-term goal, nothing real yet.

And, again, there is a usb hid specific tool as part of the usbutils package, which lsusb is part of that I would recommend using if you want to see HID-specific information like what you are asking for here, that's what it is written for.

Does unbinding a device from the driver not make it... stop working? I would think there would be side effects from that sort of thing, but I couldn't tell from that link. Everyone was just so excited to find out about it, or frustrated that it wasn't working for them. I couldn't get a read on what the actual effects were of the experiment.

The one commenter who mentioned that you can read the descriptors from /sys/kernel/debug/hid/${descriptor}/rdesc without unbinding is quite correct, though. You get both the encoded hex bytes, and a nice plain-text decoding as well. Example follows from the USB keyboard I'm currently typing on, without unbinding anything:

Hmm. I dunno, @gregkh just finally got rid of the need to run as root, with the 3.0 release. (And there was much rejoicing.)

But reading from /sys/kernel/debug/ would mean it again requires root privs, at least to access that data.

Well I think parse that info and see on usbview is interesting (for hid kernel drivers in my case, tablets, pointer devices...)

Then if that needs root, probably will be a no go, but that's exactly the main part of this issue, how to read that info that now is ** UNAVAILABLE **

@gregkh Well, the original article was about lsusb, which is what shows the "Report Descriptors: ** UNAVAILABLE **" message when viewing a given device verbosely (even when run as root). I haven't actually tried it after unbinding anything, for the reasons you confirmed.

But as for what's not visible in usbview... well, any of that. The "Report Descriptors" entry is a sub-field of the "HID Device Descriptor" that opens each "Interface" entry, prior to the "Endpoint Descriptor". For example, again using my USB keyboard, the first interface is shown (with lsusb -v) as:

usbview, for the same device, shows:

I would say that all of the Endpoint Descriptor info of import is there, but the HID Descriptor data isn't entirely represented. (There's no indication that the interface uses HID 1.10, for example.)

And as for what the Report Descriptor could show, see the collapsed part of my first comment. When reading /sys/kernel/debug/hid/<id>/rdesc as root, you get a list of every LED indicator and individual key symbol available on the keyboard.

Mind you, I'm not arguing that usbview should go back to requiring root permissions in order to read the report descriptor data from /sys/kernel/debug. (Quite the opposite, in fact!). Though I do think lsusb should probably do that, at least when run as root, especially if the alternative is to display "** UNAVAILABLE **".
