What should we do if we don't have the source anymore ??

thanks for 2.
(will this propagate to faust2 as well?)
regarding 1.
: if there are indeed no sources, I guess it's probably ok to state that explicitely somewhere in a README. you also might want to license the papers under something else than GPL (e.g. CC-BY-SA
seems to be a better match for documents).
from faust.
sources (i'm now talking mainly about the illustrations in the quick-reference; see my CC-BY-SA suggestion about full papers) are a weird thing: sometimes binaries can be sources.
a definition of sources that i quite like is what we use in Debian
sources are the preferred form of modification
so if the "master" instance of the compiler-stack
illustration is indeed a PDF and you make all adjustments directly to that PDF¹, then it can be considered as the source.
¹ i don't think you do that; i guess you are mainly hoping to not ever having to do any adjustment to that image. but if there ever were adjustments to be made, you would probably either edit the PDF directly or start from scratch. so I guess one could still consider it as source, for the time being.
(for the furture it would be nice if you could keep the "preferred source of modification")

and here's two more PDFs without sources:
- tools/physicalModeling/ir2dsp/lacPaper2017.pdf
- tools/physicalModeling/mesh2faust/vega/libraries/glui/glui-2.35/src/doc/glui_manual.pdf
