I posit that any technique to implement this feature could be done client or server side, the main difference being the data transfer. Therefore if we delegate this to the client (a) we'd need to transfer a significant amount of data to the client and (b) this would be uncompressed.

Therefor this sounds more efficient to do server side, especially considering the client is likely to be a web browser. Arguments along the lines of "clients can use a sliding window" also apply server side; there is not reason why we shouldn't teach the iterators about the limit.
