I wonder if a MutationObserver suffices for this?

Good point. That works fine for my case. Any conventions in the doc for when to fire an event vs. expecting caller to watch for DOM changes when designing a component? I saw the google-map-ready event in the google-maps component and thought maybe the convention was to fire an event when element was added. Thanks again for the quick response.

The google-map-ready event actually signifies when the Maps JS API is loaded. This isn't a DOM mutation so firing an event is the only want to get that signal.

When you're monitoring elements that are added/removed from the DOM, MutationObserver is probably the way to go for most things.
