I guess you tried with the apache config in the guide. Can you please try this one I am working on and tell me if it works?

Another alternative would be to use nginx.

There is now a fully updated guide here. I revised it while executing each command and it worked for me. Let me know how that goes.

I'll be working on this today, do I need to completely reinstall CentOS or can I just redo most of the steps?

Super new to this, so I don't really understand the problem, but I get this error on the very first step (epel repo for fedora)

[root@centosserver001 ~]# sudo wget -O /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-EPEL-6 https:

axilleas avatar axilleas commented on August 19, 2024

No, no need to reinstall CentOS of course. Not sure where you left off to pick up now.

As your problem, you could invoke wget with --no-check-certificate, but I don't recommend it. To permanently fix the problem see if you have installed the ca-certificates package. If yes and the problem persists, see this fix or if you are really unlucky and have datetime problems see this forum post.

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

I had finished the entire install originally, that's why I was confused as to why I couldn't access the admin page. I went with the --no-check-certificate flag after that error and made it all the way to creating the database and activating advanced features when I got this error:

[git@centosserver001 gitlab]$ bundle exec rake gitlab:setup RAILS_ENV=production

I checked and I do have the ca-certificates package installed, so maybe that error from before caused this? not sure. I'll try going back and using the fix you sent and see how far I get.

No, the certificate is unrelated.

Rails Error: Unable to access log file... is because the log dir either doesn't exist or has the wrong permissions. Did you follow this?

Also, I see that you use ruby 1.9. In the guide I used 2.0.0 and I didn't encounter this. In fact I just issued gitlab:setup and it finished ok.

Can you post the output of these?

Ok, try to install ruby 2 instead. As for git, see where it's installed with which git. Apparently you have also the default git that comes with centos. If you installed it from source you can then do a yum erase git so that then you have only the one you installed from source in your system. Then you MUST edit gitlab.yml and point git to its right path.

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

Ok I've installed ruby 2.0.0, I erased the 1.7 version of git, and I changed my gitlab.yml to point to /usr/local/bin/git.
I then reran Configure It, Install Gems, Initialize Database and Activate Advanced Features, Install Init Script, Check Application Status, and then Start your GitLab instance. During startup, unicorn failed to start with this error message.

Seems to indicate that the init script is wrong, but I literally copied and pasted your code for installing it and it seemed to install fine. Could it be because I've installed it several times?

It seems that something else is using port 8080. as @ilkercapli suggested, tell us what web server you installed and its config.

Ah sorry, I'm a student and I've got a job so it's difficult to keep on top of everything.
I installed both nginx and apache was already installed so I think I might have screwed up there. I'm actually getting the error indicating that it's apache.

Here's /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.

#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/etc/httpd/logs/foo.log".
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# Don't give away too much information about all the subcomponents
# we are running. Comment out this line if you don't mind remote sites

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation
# (available at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts. Note the PIDFILE variable in
# /etc/sysconfig/httpd must be set appropriately if this location is
# changed.
#
PidFile run/httpd.pid

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 60

#
# KeepAlive: Whether or not to allow persistent connections (more than
# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.
#
KeepAlive Off

#
# MaxKeepAliveRequests: The maximum number of requests to allow
# during a persistent connection. Set to 0 to allow an unlimited amount.
# We recommend you leave this number high, for maximum performance.

MaxKeepAliveRequests 100

#
# KeepAliveTimeout: Number of seconds to wait for the next request from the

### Section 2: 'Main' server configuration
#
# The directives in this section set up the values used by the 'main'
# server, which responds to any requests that aren't handled by a
# <VirtualHost> definition. These values also provide defaults for
# any <VirtualHost> containers you may define later in the file.
#
# All of these directives may appear inside <VirtualHost> containers,
# in which case these default settings will be overridden for the
# virtual host being defined.

# ServerAdmin: Your address, where problems with the server should be
# e-mailed. This address appears on some server-generated pages, such
# as error documents. e.g. [email protected]

# ServerName gives the name and port that the server uses to identify itself.
# This can often be determined automatically, but we recommend you specify
# it explicitly to prevent problems during startup.
#
# If this is not set to valid DNS name for your host, server-generated
# redirections will not work. See also the UseCanonicalName directive.
#
# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# You will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.

# UseCanonicalName: Determines how Apache constructs self-referencing

# DefaultLanguage and AddLanguage allows you to specify the language of
# a document. You can then use content negotiation to give a browser a
# file in a language the user can understand.
#
# Specify a default language. This means that all data
# going out without a specific language tag (see below) will
# be marked with this one. You probably do NOT want to set
# this unless you are sure it is correct for all cases.
#
# * It is generally better to not mark a page as
# * being a certain language than marking it with the wrong
# * language!
#
# DefaultLanguage nl
#
# Note 1: The suffix does not have to be the same as the language
# keyword --- those with documents in Polish (whose net-standard
# language code is pl) may wish to use "AddLanguage pl .po" to
# avoid the ambiguity with the common suffix for perl scripts.
#
# Note 2: The example entries below illustrate that in some cases
# the two character 'Language' abbreviation is not identical to
# the two character 'Country' code for its country,
# E.g. 'Danmark/dk' versus 'Danish/da'.
#
# Note 3: In the case of 'ltz' we violate the RFC by using a three char
# specifier. There is 'work in progress' to fix this and get
# the reference data for rfc1766 cleaned up.

### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
#
# VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
# machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
# use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
# IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
#
# Please see the documentation at
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/>
# for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
#
# You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
# configuration.

#
# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
NameVirtualHost *:80
LoadModule ssl_module /etc/httpd/modules/mod_ssl.so
NameVirtualHost *:80
<IfModule mod_ssl.c>
    # If you add NameVirtualHost *:443 here, you will also have to change
    # the VirtualHost statement in /etc/httpd/conf.d/gitlab.conf
    # to <VirtualHost *:443>
    NameVirtualHost *:443
    Listen 443
</IfModule>
#
# NOTE: NameVirtualHost cannot be used without a port specifier
# (e.g. :80) if mod_ssl is being used, due to the nature of the
# SSL protocol.
#

#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.

Try to kill both apache and nginx, then start apache, and finally do a restart on gitlab service. Actually in step 7: configure-the-web-server you should follow either nginx or apache, not both. I should clarify that.

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

Ok I won't be able to work on this until next Tuesday (or maybe this Saturday if I can get to it). I knew not to do both apache and nginx, but apache wasn't working and I wasn't sure if it would hurt something to try nginx so I went with it. I'm not too familiar with web servers :\

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

So I killed nginx and tried to start apache and got an error about the gitlab.crt. I hadn't seen the lines in the gitlab.conf specifying that I needed to create a certificate, so I created the certificate and then removed the permissions and then modified the conf file to specify /etc/httpd instead of /etc/apache2
Now when I try to run it I get the error

[root@server httpd]# service httpd restart

I've tried adding NameVirtualHost *:80 in front of the <VirtualHost *:80> and <VirtualHost *:443> lines to no avail.

Here are the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf.d/gitlab.conf

Here are the /etc/nginx/nginx.conf, /etc/nginx/conf.d/default.conf, /etc/nginx/conf.d/ssl.conf, and /etc/nginx/conf.d/virtual.conf

Could anyone help with this?

from gitlab-recipes.

axilleas avatar axilleas commented on August 19, 2024

This is a misconfiguration of apache.

Starting httpd: [Tue Sep 03 18:00:39 2013] [warn] module ssl_module is already loaded, skipping

Remove LoadModule ssl_module /etc/httpd/modules/mod_ssl.so from httpd.conf. No need to be there since it loads within the IfModule statement.

[Tue Sep 03 18:00:39 2013] [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts

In your /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf you have NameVirtualHost *:80 twice. Leave only one there and remove it from gitlab.conf as well.

(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443

In case ssl.conf is being used, do: cp /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf{,.orig}

After all these fixes restart apache and report back :)

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

Sorry for the delay. So I don't see where in httpd.conf I have the NameVirtualHost *:80 twice. I've commented out the LoadModule line, but I left the NameVirtualHost *:80 and following lines. And for the gitlab.conf are you saying I should just have the NameVirtualHost *:443? I'm still getting the error

[root@centosserver001 conf.d]# service httpd restart

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

Ah ok I got what is going on (part of it) I needed to remove just the line with NameVirtualHost *:80 from gitlab.conf. I was uncommenting the whole <VirtualHost :80> section too.
Ok now I'm just getting this error

[root@centosserver001 conf.d]# service httpd restart

Ok so I found out I had 2 Listen 443 lines in the configuration. One of them was in ssl.conf and the other was in httpd.conf. I found them with help from this page and this command grep -r 443 /etc/httpd/*

from gitlab-recipes.

Ok so I found these error messages in /var/log/httpd/error_log:

Does anyone have any updates on what I could do to fix this?

Hey @snowe2010, is this error fixed with the newer version of gitlab?

I'll check today and see what comes up.

Is this still an issue?

I gave up on trying to get it working. :\

@snowe2010 sorry to hear that... I'll try to follow the install guide and replicate your issue. The guide needs some update and I'm hoping to deal with it soon. I'll close this for now.

Ok I'm starting to work on this again. I've learned a bit more about Apache and the like and I'm going from the top. I'm now at the ruby step, but the thing is I don't want to install ruby as root. I have a jenkins instance and another user on the box both with their own rvm installs and I don't want to mess up any settings for them. How should I go about installing ruby. Should I just install it as the 'git' user (even though I technically haven't gotten to that portion of the guide yet, I already have a git user on the box from previous attempts).

snowe2010 avatar snowe2010 commented on August 19, 2024

I guess I should also specify. I'm running a Jenkins server on the 8081 port of this box, I'm running a documentation (Yard) server on the 8808 port. And I have a main page with links to all of these other ports. I would like to have a link to gitlab on the main page also, so I don't know how gitlab will tie in with all this.

I suggest you drop a line in irc or use the google group forum where you will get more attention.

I didn't even know there was an irc or google group. Should have looked closer I guess. I'll check there, thanks!
