it's that triggers just don't run on the replica.
Why? I thought we could have the ghost table in a replica and have the trigger from the main table applying changes to the ghost just fine.

@arthurnn Thank you for pointing this out! You are correct -- on Statement Based Replication, where the statement actually gets to be replayed on the replicas, and triggers do in fact work there.
This is not the case with Row Based Replication, where triggers on replicas do not get invoked because there are no "statements" per se with RBR.
Today, we do indeed Statement Based Replication, and in light of that the above does not apply. Updating within text.
