You should be able to copy the .git directory. The workspace directory
is tied to a workspace in TFS, but git-tfs creates & deletes it when
it needs it, so it shouldn't be currently mapped when git-tfs isn't
actively checking in or shelving. The workspace name is "git-tfs" +
Guid.New().

If you run into problems after copying .git where it complains about
the directory being mapped to a workspace, it will suggest running
"git tfs cleanup", and one of the things cleanup does is to unlink
.git/tfs/default/workspace from any workspaces.

The "clean" way to do what you're trying to do is to use git tfs
bootstrap. It
won't always produce an identical configuration (e.g. if you have
multiple TFS remotes), but for the happy path, it will add the TFS
configuration for a git-cloned repo.
