Git v1.7.4 added a %f specifier to the clean/smudge filter filename. See git help attributes for more details.

Yup, you can actually see how I implemented this in AssMan. The attributes file was written like this for each path:

Then the clean/smudge filter is passed in the file path instead of the binary data:
