for 3.1, I'm not going to add an email field, but associate notes to the object, then you can define a <email> note and your reports will be able to use it as if it were a object field.

thanks @mfrasca, sounds like a good fix. Also, I guess I am a dinosaur - email is not the only communication option users might want. So, presumably, this use of notes would allow other communication methods as well.
