OK, got it. The root cause is not in the NE2K driver. This is actually a defect in the relocation code that @lithoxs added to setup.S to optimize the memory layout (see #183). While computing the target segments, he forgot to align on the next paragraph, so the last bytes of an unaligned data segment are overwritten by the 'relocation of relocation code' (line 542).
