Gevorg you're obvioulsy right, and as a matter of fact, if you specify in the browser (or in the LAN properties in windows) that you should use a proxy, and point to the proxy address and port, the basic authentication "popup" pops up. If you pass the authentication, the proxy works as expected, but all the request to every site made by the browser are redirected to the target site.

Maybe ryanjarvis needed a different thing: he needed to put an authentication between the net and a unauthenticated service, and he wanted it to look to the users as usual basic auth. This is my need, too, and I'd like to ask you if you think this is achievable with http-auth / http-proxy.
