I also tried autoconfig and autoreconfig to generate the config file. I get the following error
configure.ac:19: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.

Please run "autogen.sh" to get your configure file for your environment.

Thanks, I had installed sdl as a framework bundle on mac
After I installed it as unix style build (from http://www.libsdl.org/release/), it worked.
