I suppose one disadvantage is that other (possibly temporary) repos such as go-fsnotify/fsevents couldn't make use of gopkg.in?

The go-/ convention is just a shortcut AFAIK. For example: http://gopkg.in/qml.v0 is also accessible as http://gopkg.in/go-qml/qml.v0 and both refer to http://github.com/go-qml/qml
